Leadership Lesson 1: It Takes Guts to Stand Alone

It takes guts to stand alone and look ridiculous.  That is, if your behavior is based on what other people will think.  Look how much fun dancing guy is having! People will always judge you. You have no control over that. As my good friend Mel Robbins would say ‘Let Them’.  In your life and leadership journey what brings you joy?  How do you infuse more of that into the picture?

Leadership Lesson 2: Embrace the First Follower

Then comes the First Follower who is embraced as an equal.  It also takes guts to be a first follower and it is an under appreciated role. Look how much fun the first follower is having.  He’s not worried about starting a movement, he’s getting his groove on and turning a regular outdoor concert into an epic party for two! Who in your circle do you love playing or working with?  Who helps you get your groove on?  When was the last time you grooved? 

Leadership Lesson 3: The Power of the Second Follower

Enter Second Follower, now it’s not two lone nuts.  Then the movement begins, and we reach a ‘get your groove on’ party tipping point.  Does fear of judgement prevent you from joining in on the fun?  Did waffling on a decision to buy the concert tickets in the first place have you miss out entirely?

Leadership Lesson 4: Safety in Numbers

As more people join in it’s less risky… If they were on the fence before there is no reason not to join in now. They won’t stand out; they won’t be ridiculed, and they will be part of the in crowd if they hurry. When you are around a decision-making table, how do you show up?  Do you champion the work of others?  Are you a friendly?  Or do you sit back and evaluate whether adding support will take away from the resources or political backing you need to be successful? Healthcare innovation needs to become an ignited collaborative effort.
